Minerals content in papaya

Papaya is member of the Caricaceae family that includes 6 genera and 35 species. Papaya plants are usually short-lived, but can produce fruit for more than 20 years.

The edible portion of the ripe papaya fruit contains both macrominerals and microminerals.

The macrominerals include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. The microminerals include iron, copper, zinc, manganese and selenium.

It has been established that the calcium from fruit and vegetables can be utilized much better by the body than calcium in organic form or milk products.

Papaya fruit can also contribute significant amount of minerals to the human diet, but the mineral composition of the fruit reflects the trace minerals content of soil and also varies with climate, maturity, cultivars, agricultural practices, etc.

Large variation exists in the mineral content of papayas among production regions. For example, Na appears highest in papayas from coastal orchards, and K and Mg tend to be grates in fruit grown on tropical islands with volcanic soils.

Papaya content Na varied according to water supply for the production area.
